I am interested in identification of genes that are important for motility of Salmonella. Because motility and virulence are linked and important for Salmonella pathogenesis, we have screened a unique collection of targeted deletion mutants and determined the motility phenotypes on swimming and swarming agar for over 1000 individual deletion mutants. In addition to mutants in genes previously described as important for motility (such as flgF, motA, cheY) we have identified mutants in number of additional genes that are altered in at least one type of movement. As part of this work we also identified a group of mutants that are hypermotile, and have determined that flagella are expressed by some of these mutants at inappropriate times. As flagellins are pathogen associated molecular patterns (or PAMPs), expression of these at inappropriate times during infection may have a drastic effect on pathogenesis.
